Saffin welcomes moves to cut red tape for local motorsport

LOCAL motorsport is set to benefit from the Minns Labor Government's moves to repeal outdated regulations, replacing them with industry self-regulation.

STATE Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin has welcomed the Minns Labor Government’s moves this week to cut red tape and modernised motorsport regulation.

Ms Saffin said the Government this week was introducing legislation to repeal the outdated, 40-year-old Motor Vehicle Sports (Public Safety) Act 1985.

“The repeal Bill will transition motorsport from Government regulation to industry-led self-regulation, bringing New South Wales into line with every other Australian state and territory,” Ms Saffin said.

“Industry-led regulation will give motorsport greater flexibility to grow participation, attract major events, encourage investment in infrastructure and create jobs,” Ms Saffin said.

“Safety remains central, with motorsport organisations already responsible for competitor licensing, safety protocols and event sanctioning.”

Ms Saffin noted that there had already been extensive consultation with the sector, and once the Act was repealed, there would be further consultation.

“The Lismore Automobile Club and Lismore Speedway based at the Lismore Showground are professionally run outfits and have huge followings,” Ms Saffin said.

“Removing red tape will only encourage the industry to grow, which is great news for regions like ours.”
