RECENTLY I had the pleasure of launching ProspER Northern Rivers – the Regional Economic and Environment Plan 2040 at the Northern Rivers Regional Leaders Summit in Byron Bay, attended by 180 stakeholders.
ProspER was a commitment I took to the last election because I wanted our region to have a clear long-term roadmap for growth, investment and opportunity.
Over the last 18 months the plan has been led by Business NSW Northern Rivers, with Regional Director Jane Laverty bringing together businesses, industry groups, councils, government agencies, community organisations and young people to help shape the work. Southern Cross University has been a key partner, contributing research expertise and helping ensure the plan is grounded in evidence and local knowledge.
ProspER recognises the incredible assets we already have, including our people, natural environment, agricultural sector, creative industries, education and health services. At the same time, it acknowledges the pressures facing our region, from housing shortages and workforce challenges to infrastructure needs and disaster resilience.
The plan contains 56 recommendations across 10 key domains, and identifies practical priorities for the future. The real work now is turning ideas into action through collaboration between government, business, industry and community leaders, and BusinessNSW Northern Rivers is committed to maintaining the momentum. Our region has enormous potential, and ProspER provides the framework to help us seize the opportunities ahead.

Community Road Safety Grants
The latest round of the NSW Government Community Road Safety Grants is now open and eligible community groups can apply for grants in two categories; up to $5000 to increase road safety awareness or up to $30,000 for larger projects with greater community reach.
As an example of an innovative project, last year the Port Stephens neighbourhood centre used the grant to provide vehicle maintenance and driving lessons for vulnerable women and young people. This was of particular benefit to women leaving domestic violence, supporting them with the skills, confidence and independence to move on with their lives.
Applications close 28 September 2026.
