LISMORE MP Janelle Saffin today (Friday, 27 June) announced a major refurbishment of Murwillumbah Showground’s main pavilion and funding to control noxious weeds on other Crown land reserves across her electorate.
Ms Saffin said the Minns Labor Government was providing more than $410,000 in grants to land managers of the showground and seven other reserves under the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund (CRIF).
“The pavilion at Murwillumbah Showground is over 100 years old and, despite numerous floods and damage, it remains a focal point for the local community due to the hard work of Land Manager Allan Brown and his dedicated team,” Ms Saffin said.
“Maintaining this iconic heritage structure will safeguard the home of events like the monthly Murwillumbah Showground Markets and the annual Murwillumbah Show.
“Controlling noxious weeds is vital to keeping our other reserves healthy and functional for community use and protecting the environment for our native animals and plants. It also reduces the risk of weeds spreading to surrounding lands.”
Lismore electorate projects being funded include:
- $337,259 to refurbish the main pavilion at the Murwillumbah Showground, including a new roof, general maintenance and painting.
- A total of $82,565 to control noxious weeds on reserves across the electorate, including:
- $23,621 to the land manager for weed management on Tyalgum Recreation and Flora Reserve and Brays Creek Reserve.
- $17,856 to Border Ranges Richmond Valley Landcare Network for control of priority weeds at Hanging Rock Falls Reserve and $6,240 for weed control along the Richmond River, adjacent to The Risk Public School.
- $16,456 to the land manager for weed management at Byrangery Grass Reserve, Goonengerry.
- $11,528 to the land manager for weed control at North Codrington Flood Refuge Reserve, Codrington.
- $6,864 to Whian Whian Landcare Incorporated for weed control on Parish Reserve for Dunoon, Rous.
Crown reserves play a vital role by providing land for recreation, community organisations and the environment.
